7 Surprising Benefits of Becoming a Mum (Besides the Luxury of wearing Stylish Maternity Wear!)
What kind of mum will you be? How will your life change? Will your baby bring you joy straight away or will you struggle with post-natal depression? Will your maternity wear suit you?
Surely these are some of the questions spinning around your head as you begin this nine-month journey and that’s absolutely understandable! All mums do! I did too and that’s why today I bring you some of my personal pregnancy stories and discoveries.
Here they are the 7 surprising benefits of becoming a mum.
1: Discovering unconditional love.
Undoubtedly first prize.
First loves, platonic loves, loves of your life, etc – it’s all very good and positive, but the truth is that nothing compares to the love you feel for your children. It does come with its challenges, of course, but from the moment that little person starts forming inside your body, the loving bond that is created is nothing quite like anything else. For me, that feeling of unconditional love was particularly overwhelming when I first saw their faces. I had never experienced anything quite like it. That tiny little human being was going to be with me for the rest of our lives and I was going to be responsible for their wellbeing and for providing him/her with security and love, lots of love.
Nothing has ever come closed to that.
2: Finding purpose in my life
We party, we rave, we change boyfriends, we study this today, tomorrow we study that – but few of us ever think about our purpose when we are young. We live the best and happiest we can – and that’s great! –but the purpose is unclear. Then, we have our first child, and it all makes sense.
No, I’m not saying that our only goal in life is being a mother. Certainly not and very far from it! But having children somehow puts things in its place. It certainly did for me and it lead me towards finding the woman that I am today.
3: Enjoying their evolution
Have you watched the movie Boyhood? Nominated for an Oscar for Best Movie this year, Boyhood filmed the life of young Mason over twelve years in real life since the age of six until he moved to college. Having your own child is exactly like watching a life-long movie. You get to see their little faces change to look more (or less!) like you. You get to see them making choices that lead them towards certain avenue and not others. You get to experience their joyous moments and their less happy ones.
And you know what the best of it all is?
You always get to play a part in that movie!
4: Increasing your own motivation to make healthy choices
There’s nothing like motherhood to make you rethink about your own unhealthy habits.
Once you fall pregnant, it suddenly becomes very clear that your life choices no longer affect just you. Your life choices can give that little person a head start or a disadvantage. That’s why I placed so much emphasis on exercising and keeping fit during pregnancy, because there was no doubt in my mind that improving my habits will keep them safe and healthy.
And once your baby’s born, there’s a tiny, utterly dependent, person counting on you to stay healthy enough to raise him or her.
5: Staying young
I feel we are all so preoccupied with our busy adult lives these days that we forget the joy of acting young and feeling young.
Having children is a constant reminder that we too, had a precious childhood we should not forget. It reminds us that it’s okay to run barefoot under the sprinklers in our lawns. That jumping in the trampoline with them is alright. In fact, it’s more than alright, it’s hilarious!
Thanks to the free-spirited, miniature people in my life, I continually feel young and energised.
6: Reducing your risk of cancer
On a slightly more serious note. It has been well documented that giving birth (particularly if relatively early in life) is one of the best ways you can help protect yourself against cancer.
Well, pregnancy causes the cells in your breasts to mature and become less susceptible to cancer-causing changes. The earlier your pregnancy, the least amount of time your breast cells are immature and vulnerable to this disease.
Not only that. It seems that the hormonal changes during pregnancy help prevent breast cancer. And that’s good news all around.
7: Wearing very stylish maternity wear!
Call me superficial if you must! But boy did I enjoy wearing the amazing range of stylish maternity wear available these days in stores throughout the country and online! I’m just glad I didn’t have to go through my pregnancies last century!! And what can I say in relation to sport maternity wear that I haven’t said before? My mum would have never dreamt of wearing the very cool maternity sports tops and yoga pants I got to wear, let alone do the exercise I got to do. We are certainly a lucky lot!
Have you check Pregfit’s super comfy and very stylish fitness maternity wear? One of the joys of my pregnancies, no doubt about that! You can find them here.
I hope this post made you smile. I’d love to hear from you. Share the benefit of motherhood you’re most looking forward to, in the comments below!
